Map tools pane

The Map Tools pane provides standard map tools for navigating and viewing information on a map. As the tools in the pane are configurable by the agency or organization providing the map information, you may not be able to view all of the following map tools..

Map Tools toolbar

Map Tool	Name	Purpose
	Zoom In	Zooms in the map either by clicking the map or by dragging the tool across the map to draw a shape. The map is then zoomed in to the area defined within that shape.
	Zoom Out	Zooms out the current map.
	Drag Pan	Pans the map as you drag the tool across the map.
	Identify	Displays information about a feature. Click the Identify tool and then click an area on the map. Select the feature type that you want to view and all information associated with that feature is displayed.
	Address Search	Helps you locate an address on the map viewer. You can also click a location on the map and view the address of the location in the Address Search dialog box.
	Previous Map	Changes the view back to the previously-displayed map view.
	Next Map	Changes the view to the next map view in the sequence. This button is only available if you have clicked the Previous Map button at least once.
	Selection	Selects features on the map.
	Markup	Starts the Markup tools.
	Measure	Determine distance by drawing a line or determine area by drawing a polygon, circle or rectangle.
	Route Measure	Determines distance between starting point and end point.
	Buffer Selections	Selects feature within a buffer around a point selected.
	Search by Coordinates	Searches map features using coordinates.
	Document Viewer	Opens a new window with documents or maps that can be viewed or purchased.
	Active Layer	Opens the Change Active Layer window so you can select a different layer to be the active layer.
	Clear Buffer Rings	Removes the buffer shapes from the map.
	Clear Map	Removes results from the map and closes the Results window.
	Reset	Arranges all open dialog boxes and toolbars to their original position.
	Help	Opens the online help for the map viewer.
	Refresh Memory	Refreshes the map.
	Add Local Data	Adds a map data file to the currently displayed map. You have these options: • ESRI Shape file • KML • WMS • GPX
	Clear Local Data	Removes local map data you have added to the currently displayed map. You cannot add more than one local file to the map viewer at a time. You must remove any currently added file before being able to add another.
	Area of Interest	Creates bookmarks of areas you draw or zoom into on the map. You can save bookmarks and consult them later.
	GeoRSS	Displays the information for the GeoRSS feed.
	Crosshairs	Displays crosshairs on the map.
	Map Display Coordinates	Turns on or off the set of coordinates in the lower-right area of the map viewer.
	Map Tips	Displays information about a feature when that feature is clicked on the map.
	WMS Identify	If the map is supplied by a web map service, this icon is available. Click this icon and select a point on the map that you want to view more information about. In Attribute Details For, select the feature type you want to view. Information about the feature you selected is displayed.
	Refresh	Redisplays the map to incorporate any recent changes.
	Overview Map	Displays a miniature version of the full map and indicates the currently displayed map area with a red rectangle to show where it is in relation to the full map.
